Some months after I ran into Billy, the boy who started it all with his potato chips, I received this letter:

Dear Bruno,

Meeting your mom for the first time changed my life, but I didn’t know it when I was seven. I remember I was at the Boys and Girls Club, playing with my friends that afternoon. I was hungry and so I ate some potato chips and noticed two adults approach me. Not knowing who they were, I stayed quiet but noticed they seemed concerned about what I was eating. The sweet old lady said something to the man, who asked me if that was going to fill my stomach for the day. I nodded my head. The lady spoke to the man in a language I didn’t really understand and then they left.

About an hour later, they came with a tray of food. I didn’t know what kind of food it was, but it smelled good and it was hot and ready to eat. The man approached me and with an accent said something like, “Hey, little boy, this is my mom, Caterina. My name’s Bruno. We’ve brought pasta for the kids at the club.” We all ate the pasta since some of us wouldn’t get a hot meal at home. Caterina and Bruno left the club with big smiles on their faces. The next day, Caterina and Bruno came back again with more pasta. I wanted to ask Caterina why she came back, but she didn’t speak English. Caterina and Bruno brought pasta to the club every day, and Caterina took some pictures with our club girls.

Ten years went by and I spotted Bruno serving pasta at the Boys and Girls Club again. When I approached him, I asked him if he remembered me. Bruno, laughing, said, “Should I?” “Yeah, because I was one of the first kids to try your pasta!” Bruno was shocked and came and hugged me hard. He said he wanted my family and me to come to his restaurant. When we got there, Bruno got to meet all my family and told them our meal was on the house, that we didn’t have to pay for anything. When we were getting ready to leave the restaurant, my family saw pictures of Caterina and Bruno. My sister was real surprised when she noticed she was in one of the pictures, sitting right next to Bruno’s mom. When we told him, Bruno was so glad and he hugged my sister.

For my sister and me to be part of something important makes us happy cause we know there’s a lot of kids who have a hard life. It’s great that Caterina’s legacy will continue as long as you keep serving pasta every day for all the kids.
